Jason M. DeCuir, MBA, JD, LLM, is a national leader in state and local taxation with deep experience advising businesses across industries on complex, multistate tax matters. He is Co-owner of Advantous Consulting, LLC, a leading multistate tax services firm with offices in Louisiana and Texas, providing customizable, end-to-end solutions from compliance through advanced planning and advisory consulting. Jason focuses on multistate growth initiatives, strategic alliances, acquisitions, and expansion across all service lines and oversees Advantous’ Business Development and External Affairs teams. He is also the Founding Partner of Advantous Law LLC, a firm dedicated exclusively to State and Local Tax (SALT) matters.
Before joining Advantous in 2020, Jason served as a Principal at a global tax services firm, leading multistate engagements involving Transaction Tax, Property Tax, Corporate Income and Franchise Tax, Severance Tax, and Credits and Incentives, with an emphasis on dispute resolution and advocacy. He previously held senior leadership roles at the Louisiana Department of Revenue as Chief of Staff, Assistant Secretary, and Executive Counsel, advising three State Secretaries and the Governor on tax-related legal and policy matters while overseeing the Litigation, Policy and Legislative Services, Criminal Investigation, and Public Affairs divisions. Earlier, he practiced as a Transactional and Tax Attorney at several large law firms, becoming a Partner, and began his legal career clerking for Judge Frank J. Polozola of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana.
Jason is widely recognized as a national SALT policy expert and a trusted advocate for tax policy reform in state capitols nationwide. He is actively involved with, and frequently speaks to, organizations including the Council on State Taxation (COST), the Tax Foundation, the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT), Tax Executives Institute (TEI), the Federation of Tax Administrators (FTA), and the Multistate Tax Commission (MTC), and has appeared on television and radio as a taxation subject matter expert.
In addition to his national work, Jason serves in influential regional and state leadership roles. He sits on the boards of the Texas Taxpayers and Research Association (TTARA) and the Texas Association of Business (TAB) and serves with Taxpayers for IRS Transformation and the Mississippi Department of Revenue Business Advisory Council. He is the Chair of the Louisiana State Bar Association’s Taxation Section and has been appointed to numerous councils and commissions, including service as Chairman of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI) Board of Directors and Chairman of LABI’s Taxation & Finance Issue Council. His appointments also include the Louisiana Sales Tax Streamlining and Modernization Commission, the Louisiana Tax Institute, the Louisiana Task Force on Structural Change in Budget and Tax Policy (HCR 11), the PAR Constitutional Advisory Council, and the PAR Tax Advisory Committee. He served on Governor Bobby Jindal’s fiscal transition team, and during the 2020 special session was appointed Chair of the HR 31 Centralized Sales and Use Tax Administration Study Group to develop legislation to centralize Louisiana’s sales tax collection system. In 2013, the Governor of Louisiana entrusted Jason to lead tax reform efforts that restructured the state’s tax appeals process and improved Louisiana’s COST scorecard from “D-” to “B.” In 2020, he was appointed Chair of the Louisiana Economic Recovery Task Force to support the state’s COVID-19 economic recovery.
Jason earned a B.B.A. from Howard University, where he was an Academic All-American placekicker, an MBA from Louisiana Tech University, a B.C.L. and J.D. from LSU’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center, and an LL.M. in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center.
He is active in the community, serving on the boards of the Food Bank, Boys and Girls Club, Cristo Rey Franciscan High School, Inspire Charter Academy, Salvation Army, and Young Leaders Academy. He is a member of the federal, state, and local bar associations in Louisiana. In his spare time, Jason enjoys golfing and boating and serves as a color commentator for high school football on a major Louisiana television network.
